Pregnancy and Skin Care
A woman can look ravishing during pregnancy; the happiness of a soon-to-be mother gives her a ‘glow’ which keeps her looking radiant. This, however, may not be true for all women. Pregnancy hormomes can have an adverse effect playing havoc on the skin. Pregnancy is a delicate phase and a woman’s body goes through huge changes during this time. Since skin is the outermost layer of the body, even a slight change in the skin becomes glaringly evident.
Acne is the most common skin problem to hit women during pregnancy. Other problems like rashes and pigmentation also occur frequently.
A woman knows that what she consumes is extremely important for the growth of her baby. Therefore, everything you eat, drink and even apply may affect not just you but also your baby. Ingredients in the products that come into contact with your skin get absorbed into your bloodstream and you need to be careful about the products you choose.
All you need to do to maintain your skin during pregnancy is to stick to the basics of skin care.
If your skin is oily, it will attract more dust and become more acne prone. You will probably experience your worst breakouts during the first trimester of pregnancy. If you don’t treat it right away, it will continue until you deliver, and sometimes even after the baby is born. Try to keep your face as clean as possible using a mild cleanser. If you need to visit a dermatologist, make sure you inform her that you are pregnant. Mild oatmeal-based facial scrubs are your best bet for unplugging oily pores. The most important addition you should make to your skin-care routine during pregnancy is a moisturizer with at least SPF 15, to gain protection from UV rays.
When you are pregnant, hormones can cause dark spots on your face and body. This is called Chloasma. While no prescription treatment has proven safe, topical treatments that use ingredients such as vitamin C or azelaic acid are worth a try.
During pregnancy, there is also the possibility of skin becoming dry due to dehydration and becoming more prone to tanning. This can be solved by using sunscreen lotions. Ensure that the product is suitable for your current requirements and is safe for your body.
Lastly, stretch marks are a common problem during pregnancy causing a lot of concern to women. To deal with it, apply gel on your tummy. Care should be taken to do this very gently. The massaging has benefits like making your skin supple so that stretch marks are smoothened out.
Add to these a good diet and enough sleep and you will glow all the way through your pregnancy.
